How to Cook the Perfect Ribeye at Home

Few things in life are as satisfying as a perfectly cooked ribeye steak. With its marbling, rich flavor, and juicy tenderness, ribeye is often the king of steaks. The good news? You don’t need a steakhouse — you can achieve steakhouse quality at home with the right method and tools.

Here’s how.

Ingredients

  • 1 ribeye steak (1–1.5 inches thick)
  • Kosher salt & freshly ground black pepper
  • 1–2 tbsp olive oil or high-heat oil
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2–3 garlic cloves, smashed
  • Fresh herbs (like thyme or rosemary)

Step 1: Season Generously

Pat the steak dry, then season generously with salt and pepper. A great steak doesn’t need much more, but you can experiment with rubs.

Step 2: Choose Your Cooking Surface

You can grill your ribeye or sear it in a cast-iron pan. For indoor cooking, cast iron delivers unbeatable flavor and crust.

Step 3: Sear the Steak

Heat your grill or pan until very hot. Add oil, then place the ribeye down and don’t move it for 3–4 minutes. Flip once and sear the other side.

  • For medium-rare: cook until the internal temperature is 130–135°F.
  • Use a meat thermometer for accuracy.

Step 4: Baste with Butter

During the last minute, add butter, garlic, and herbs to the pan (or on top of the steak if grilling). Tilt the pan and spoon melted butter over the steak for rich flavor.

Step 5: Rest and Slice

Transfer the ribeye to a cutting board and let it rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing. This locks in juices.

Pro Tips

  • Always start with a steak at room temperature for even cooking.
  • Resting is non-negotiable — cutting too soon drains the juices.
  • Cast iron pans hold heat better than stainless steel for perfect searing.

Final Thoughts

Cooking a ribeye at home is easier than you think. With a hot pan or grill, quality seasoning, and the right tools, you can serve a steakhouse-worthy meal right in your kitchen.
